Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican City - Basílica de San Pedro en El Vaticano

Today I visited the most important Catholic church in Italy: St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the world headquarters of Catholicism. The church receives millions of visitors annually and today I witnessed it. Fortunately, our professors have already been several times in this city and knew to take us to the church very early in the morning. We arrived about 7:30 am and at that time the view was beautiful. All of St. Peter's Square is very impressive, but the majesty of the basilica is able to attract all the attention of the visitors. Inside, the impression is the same: it's majestic. The ceiling height is comparable to a 30-story building, however in this case the 30 stories are combined into one room. It's like a huge box decorated with sculptures, paintings, and large columns. The art collection inside the church is first class: the Pieta of Michelangelo, the statue of St. Longinus by Bernini, and most importantly the tomb of St. Peter.
To end our visit to the church, we climbed the 551 steps to reach the highest point - the dome. From there, we enjoyed a stunning panoramic view of Rome and a fresh breeze. When we left the church, St. Peter's Square was already packed with visitors. It's definitely better to visit the Vatican early in the morning.

 Honestly, I could write a lot to try to explain the beauty of this place, but it's better to see my photo collection. Hope you like the basilica as much as I did!

Este día visité la iglesia católica más importante de Italia: la Basílica de San Pedro en la ciudad del Vaticano. Siendo la sede mundial del catolicismo, esta iglesia recibe anualmente millones de visitantes y hoy pude comprobarlo. Afortundamente nuestros profesores de ETSU ya han estado en varias ocasiones en esta ciudad, y nos llevaron a conocer el sitio muy temprano en la mañana. Llegamos cerca de las 7:30 am y la vista era lindísima. Toda la plaza de San Pedro es muy impresionante, pero la majestuosidad de la basílica logra atraer toda la atención de los visitantes. Adentro, el la impresión es la misma: una majestuosidad.  La altura del techo es como la de un edificio de 20 pisos, pero sin los 20 pisos divisorios. Es como una enorme caja decorada con esculturas, pinturas, y enormes columnas. La colección de arte adentro de la iglesia es de primera clase: la Piedad de Miguel Ángel, la estatua de San Longinos de Bernini, y la más importante que es la tumba de San Pedro, entre otros.

Para finalizar  nuestra visita a la iglesia, subimos las 551 gradas para llegar al punto más alto de la iglesia: la cúpula. Desde allí  pudimos disfrutar una impresionante vista panorámica de toda Roma y una fresca brisa que complementó la experiencia. A la hora que salimos de la iglesia, la plaza de San Pedro ya lucí a abarrotada de visitantes. Definitivamente es mejor visitar el Vaticano muy temprano en la mañana.

Honestamente, podría escribir mucho para tratar de explicarles la belleza de este lugar, pero mejor vean mi colección de fotos. Espero que les guste tanto como me gustó a mí.

Church of St. Agnes - Iglesia de Santa Inés

The church of St. Agnes, located in the Piazza Navona, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful churches in all of Rome. This Baroque church was built over the ruins of the ancient Stadium of Domitian, and the reconstruction started in the seventeenth century. One century before, the church was privately owned by a wealthy family named Pamphilj. The church served as a family chapel only... what a luxury! There were several architects who participated in the construction of this masterpiece, among them are Francesco Borromini and the famous Gianlorenzo Bernini.

The magnificent church is decorated with amazing paintings and  marble sculptures. Probably, the most impressive interior decoration is the enormous painting on the dome portraying the assumption of virgin Mary to heaven, by Ciro Ferri and Sebastiano Corbellini.

During my visit to this church I was very disappointed because photography was not allowed inside the building. I couldn't take any pictures inside to share with you! I must admit that I was tempted to break the rule and take some photos to show you, but surprisingly a little voice in my head told me to be respectful and just follow the rule. I would not do on to others something I would not like them to do on to me. So, for now, the only pictures I have are from outside the church. In my next few posts, I will be very careful to select churches that allow photography inside.

La iglesia de Santa Inés ubicada en la Piazza Navona, es sin duda una de las más bellas iglesias en toda Roma. Esta iglesia de estilo barroco fue construida sobre las ruinas del antiguo estadio de Domiciano, iniciando la reconstrucción en el siglo XVII. Un siglo antes, la iglesia fue propiedad privada de una adinerada familia de apellido Pamphilj. Por algún tiempo, la iglesia sirvió únicamente como capilla familiar. ¿Se imaginan teniendo una iglesia privada en plena Roma? ... ¡Qué lujo!

Entre los diferentes arquitectos que participaron en la construcción de esta obra maestra están Francesco Borromini y el famoso Gian Lorenzo Bernini. La magnífica iglesia está decorada con pinturas y esculturas de mármol que a primera vista capta la admiración de los visitantes. A mi criterio, la decoración interior más impresionante es el fresco de la cúpula, en donde se aprecia la escena de la asunción de la Virgen María al cielo, pintado por los respetables artistas Ciro Ferri y Corbellini Sebastiano.

Durante mi visita a esta iglesia no me fue permitido tomar fotografías en el interior del edificio, así que no podré mostrarles la majestuosidad de esta iglesia por dentro. Debo admitir que tuve la tentación de romper la regla y tomar algunas fotos para poder mostrárselas. Pero después de pensarlo por un minuto, decidí acatar las reglas por respeto. No voy a hacer a otras personas algo que no me gustaría que me hicieran a mí. Así que,por ahora, las únicas fotos que tengo son del exterior de la iglesia. En mis próximas publicaciones, voy a ser muy cuidadosa en seleccionar iglesias que no tengan restricciones con fotografías en el interior.

Hello from Rome! ¡Hola, desde Roma!

 Hello, my dear friends!

I want to let you know that I'm in Rome already! Today, we mainly spent our time settling in our apartments located in Trastevere, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome. This evening, while visiting Italy, around 30 students from East Tennessee State University had dinner together. After dinner, we walked to the Piazza Navona to see the many artistic creations that are concentrated there. In the middle of the square there is the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers and just ahead, the church of St. Agnes. For now, I will just share some pictures of the square that I took with my mobile phone, but I promise that tomorrow I'll have a full report on this majestic church for you. Do not miss it! You cannot imagine how excited I am to be sharing my journey with you!!

¡¡¡Hola, mis queridos amigos! 

Quiero compartirles que ya estoy en Roma. Este día básicamente lo ocupamos para instalarnos en nuestros apartamentos ubicados en Trastevere, uno de los barrios más antiguos de Roma. Al final del día, los más de 30 estudiantes de la Universidad Estatal del Este de Tenesí (ETSU, por sus siglas en Inglés) que estamos de visita en Italia, cenamos juntos. Después de la comida, caminamos hasta la Plaza Navona para ver las muchas creaciones  artísticas que se concentran en ese lugar. Enmedio de esta plaza está la famosa Fuente de los Cuatro Ríos, y justo al frente, la iglesia de Santa Inés. Por ahora solamente les comparto algunas de las fotografías de la plaza que logré tomar con mi teléfono móvil, pero les prometo que mañana les tendré un reporte completo sobre esta majestuosa iglesia. ¡¡No se lo vayan a perder!! No saben lo emocionada que estoy de estar compartiendo mi viaje con ustedes.

Let’s go to Rome!

I feel that I am a very lucky woman. In just five days, I am going to Italy to take a digital photography class. Can you believe it? I am going to Italy to take a photography class!!

I will spend most of my time in Rome. However, I will visit other cities like Venice and Florence. As part of the requirements for this class, I will be publishing a daily blog. I will be sharing pictures of the places that I will have the chance to visit. My professor suggested focusing in on a theme for my blog. It should be a theme that really attracts me, and that I feel passionate about. So, I have decided to focus on churches. Starting on May 14th, I will be sharing with you, my friends, images of Italian churches. I hope you will join me throughout my visit to this beautiful country. I promise to share pictures that will make you feel like you are with me on this trip. 

I want to thank you for taking time to read this first blog. Also, I want to ask you to share my publications on your Facebook, Twitter, and other social media. A good part of my grade will be based on the number of readers that I get on my blog, so please help me!

Now I have to go because I have to start packing my things. You should get ready too, because in just five days we are leaving to Italy!!

¡Vámonos a Roma!

Me siento una mujer sumamente afortunada. En tan sólo cinco días, me voy a Italia a recibir una clase de fotografía digital. ¿Pueden imaginarse? ¡Fotografía digital en Italia, no lo puedo creer! 

Definitivamente, voy a pasar la mayoría de mi estancia en Roma, sin embargo, visitaré otras ciudades como Venecia y Florencia . Como parte de los requerimientos para ésta clase, debo publicar un blog diariamente en donde estaré compartiendo fotografías de los lugares que visite. La profesora nos sugirió enfocarnos en un tema para publicar, es decir, buscar un tema específico que nos apasione. A mí me apasionan mucho las iglesias. Por lo tanto, a partir del 14 de Mayo estaré compartiendo con ustedes amigos, una diversidad de fotografías de iglesias de Italia. Espero que me acompañen durante toda mi visita a ese lindo país. Prometo tenerles imágenes que les haga sentir que andan conmigo en este viaje. De antemano quiero agradecerles que se hayan tomado el tiempo de leer éste primer blog, y les invito a que junto a mí descubramos algunas de las muchísimas iglesias de la antigua Roma y de otras ciudades Italianas.
